History - Shadforth WI

Shadforth WI
For nearly 70 years, Shadforth WI has provided a meeting place for women in the rural area of Shadforth, County Durham.

Shadforth WI remains an important and vibrant part of Shadforth's community, and still meets in the Village Hall it helped to build. In an age of increasing social isolation, it provides a chance to meet others and learn and try something new.  Being part of a major national organisation also means that Shadforth WI members have access to a huge range of opportunities on a county and national level, as well as in Shadforth.

Shadforth WI has charitable status and is self-governing within the framework of the WI Constitution and Rules.  Shadforth WI is part of Durham County Federation of Women’s Institutes (DCFWI).

"After being a member for 52 years I think I must enjoy it!!  There's so much fun and friendship between us, we're a great group."

"Congratulations on SWI's 60th birthday.  I miss the day we met the lady with big bag filled with beautiful embroidery.  Thank you, SWI members.  Memories in Shadforth make me happy."

“Always an interesting meeting with a varied programme – with friends old and new.”

“First and foremost a lovely group of people! Varied topics and social time with lots of chat and laughter.”

“After 16 years in Pittington and Littletown WI it closed in January 2005. We decided to join Shadforth WI as when we visited it we were made so welcome by everyone – it was a very friendly experience.”

Memories of a Shadforth WI piano

At some point a piano was kindly donated to Shadforth WI and it provided musical accompaniment to several Shadforth WI shows! It was also available for village use for several years, Space requirements in the hall meant the piano was donated to a local family's children in Autumn 2010.

Changing Times

In April 2019, the time of the Monthly Meeting was changed from 7pm-10pm to 7pm-9.30pm.
